A Brief History of the Movie Theater

Lights, camera, action! Movie theaters have always been a beloved venue for cinema fans of all ages. Whether you’re catching the newest action flick with your friends, seeing a romantic comedy with that special someone, or trying not to scream at the latest horror film, the movie theater is a great place for fun and adventure. But just how did the movie theater get its start?

• What many consider to be the first movie theater opened in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 26th, 1896. The theater known as Vitascope Hall was the very first in the United States to exclusively show motion pictures for paying audience members.
  
  
• Later that year, Mitchel and Moe Mark, two brothers from Buffalo, New York, opened their own movie theater. This was possible thanks to Thomas Edison’s Vitascope Projectors. Early movie theaters generally showed travel scenes, as motion photography was still becoming popular. Movie-goers could expect to pay around 3 cents for admission.
  
  
• During the first few years of the 1900s, nickelodeon theaters became the popular choice for cinema fans around the country. These multi-purpose theaters featured short films, songs, presentations, and other entertaining and informative shows for the public. Because admission was just 5 cents, the term “nickelodeon” stuck.
  
  
• In 1912, the Regent Theater opened in New York City. Three years later, The Birth of a Nation premiered, helping set the mood for future full-length motion pictures. Throughout the 1920s, more extravagant theaters started making their way, earning the title of “movie palaces”.
  
  
• Over the years, multiplex theaters started becoming popular. These theaters feature a variety of motion pictures in different rooms, letting audiences choose their favorite genres. Movie theaters also became fully-equipped with concession stands offering drinks, candies, and the classic movie treat, popcorn.
